They sat on the beach, shoulders almost touching looking out at the water. There was an electric energy you could feel sparking between them as they sat there quietly, listening to the waves, and smiling as the tiny white foam bubbles at the very edge of the water gently rolled towards their toes. The occasional glance into each other’s eyes sent a flood of emotions and excitement through her body and she knew she wanted more than just the cheese and crackers they had been nibbling on laid out in front of them on the blue blanket he had brought. But today felt different. She felt a softness around him that she hadn’t felt before. A vulnerability as if another layer of his shell was cracking and dissolving during their conversation and he was allowing her further into his world. She couldn’t help but wonder if it had something to do with the water and the waves. He had mentioned he loved to go sailing and maybe this was a place where he could let go of the world and any fears around him to be completely vulnerable. Maybe that is what she was seeing and feeling and there was a reason he brought her here. Did he want to let her in more?
It was getting close to sunset and the sky was filling up with the most beautifully painted hues of blues, grays, and deep, almost fiery oranges to add to the already picture-perfect backdrop. It was like something out of a movie for her that she was experiencing for the first time. He took a sip of his whisky, set the glass in the sand, slowly stood up and faced her. He didn’t say a word and she slowly looked up all six foot two inches of this handsome dark-haired man, to meet his deep hazel eyes as he smiled and reached for her with his left hand. No words were necessary. She slid her right hand into his, feeling the connection in that touch was like someone had switched on the light for the very first time in an abandoned house that had been sitting in darkness for a very long time. She forgot how good it felt to have someone reach for her in the simplest act of wanting to hold her hand. Just be in the moment, she told herself as they slowly walked towards the water. She didn’t want any thoughts creeping in that would make this moment end. They stopped at the edge with their feet in the water, toes in the sand, watching the golden hour glow reflecting like diamonds sparkling on top of the water in each color. They could see a flock of Sanderlings next to them dancing in and out with the waves and their occasional chirp would mix in with the waves as she stood there with him in the water. How could he get any more perfect than this? She felt transported to another world like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, but she did not want to click her heels three times and go home. This was real, and she wanted more…of this.
