PERSEVERANCE

December 23, 2021

ONE WORD for 2022

My one word for 2022 came to me a couple of days ago before we begin to celebrate the new year. I was standing in my kitchen getting ready to walk out my back door to take a walk in my garden, and loud and clear there it was…

PERSEVERANCE.

It was as though the sliding glass door was this magical portal and it opened up (who knows…maybe Dr. Strange was on the other side spinning his magic!) to welcome the word into my existence in all its clarity. I knew then, that is my word for 2022. I was even more validated when the word kept popping in and out the next couple of days while I was working or wrapping gifts.  This was not just a random word passing though my thoughts from all the trials that I had been through, and that we have ALL been through this year, but it was for me to now hold this word safely in my heart and mind to walk through my experiences in the upcoming year.

So…naturally my curiosity led me to seek what is the official definition of Perseverance and where does it come from?

perseverance

[ˌpərsəˈvirəns]

NOUN

  1. persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.

According to Etymonline, the word perseverance has been used since the mid-14c, as the Middle English perseveraunce. This comes from the Old French perseverance, a 12c word that is now the Modern French persévérance. This comes from the Latin perseverantia, from the root perseverant, the past participle stem of perseverare, a Latin verb meaning to continue steadfastly. This word has been used since 14c to mean continuing or enduring.

What can I learn from my trusted friend, now known as Perseverance, who will walk beside me for the next year? Well, that is the exciting part of what is yet to come. I welcome the lessons and experiential wisdom that I will gain from this beautiful word and how it will weave its way in and out of my life to create moments filled with all emotions to learn from, and memories for me to hold dear and to share. There may already be a definition in the dictionary…but I am excited to define what it means to me in the coming year.
